Home for the Holidays

Folks, we are heading into the holiday season and you know what that means? Friends, family, and neighbors gathering in your home to celebrate, share meals, and socialize. If you are like me, you can’t wait for the fun to start! And for all the planners and party host and hostesses out there, the holiday season means your living room, dining spaces and kitchens are about to get some heavy use.

As much fun as the holidays are, it’s the time of year when most homeowners will notice when things aren’t working in their main living areas. But here’s a novel idea, instead of getting frustrated in the moment, use it as an opportunity to figure out how you could improve these areas in time for next year’s festivities. Here’s how: after each holiday event, review the list below and make notes on what you experienced. When you are ready to renovate you will be able to tell your remodeler and designer exactly what is missing from your existing home layout.

Kitchen

kitchen remodel

  • There was enough space in the kitchen to prepare meals.
  • More than one person could work in the kitchen at the same time without issue.
  • Guests were able to hang out in the kitchen area without being in the way.
  • While cooking, I felt like I was still able to socialize.
  • The appliances are in good working condition and do what I need them to.
  • Finding everything I needed to prepare and serve meals was easy.
  • Serving and clean up went smoothly.
  • The space is well lit.
  • The current room configuration (open or closed to others) is the way I like it.

Dining Room & Living Room (complete for each)

  • The space is large enough to accommodate everyone comfortably.
  • The current feel of the room, whether formal or informal, feels right.
  • Movement into and out of the room is easy.
  • The space is warm, inviting and well lit.
  • The current room configuration (open or closed to others) is the way I like it.
