Of all the appliances in our homes the refrigerator is one of the hardest working and often takes a beating. We pack it full, neglect expired items, and ignore spills until they have become one with the refrigerator. A clean refrigerator keeps food fresher, so here are some helpful steps to deep clean your homes refrigerator.
1. Remove shelves, racks, and drawers, this will allow them to reach room temperature and prevent them from cracking.
2. Add 2 Tbsp of baking soda to 1 quart of hot water and wash all inside surfaces. Avoid using scented dish soaps and detergents, they can leave behind a scent that the food will adsorb. Work from the top to bottom to prevent dripping on surfaces you've already cleaned. Rinse with a damp cloth and dry with a clean towel. For stubborn messes cover them with a warm wet cloth for a few minutes then use a nonabrasive scrubber.
3. Wash drawers and shelves in the sink with baking soda mixture. Use the same solution to clean the rubber bumper that seals the refrigerator door. Inspect the seals for any cracks or damage and ensure that they properly fit to prevent cold loss and temperature fluctuations.
4. Add 1 Tbsp of dish washing soap to a quart of water and wipe do outside surface and handles of the refrigerator. There is no need o rinse the solution will dry on its own and take germs with it.
*To extend the cleanliness of your refrigerator wipe down jars and containers before placing them back in the fridge.
