How to Bring Two Different Styles Together in Your Remodel.

Every person has their own decorating style and when you begin the selections process during your remodel those preferences will take center stage. After all, this is when you get to put your personal stamp on your renovation by picking tile, countertops, cabinets, flooring, paint colors, fixtures, and lighting. How exciting! You can see it all coming to life! But what if you and your other half don’t agree on style? You like ultra modern and they prefer a classic, traditional aesthetic. How in the world are you going to get through the process and both end up happy with the result? It can be done with a little patience, willingness to compromise and guidance from a seasoned designer.

Here are a few tips on how to compromise on bringing two styles together in your remodel.

For the first few, let’s say one of you wants to use white cabinetry and the other would like a dark espresso stain.

  • Find the middle ground. Don’t go with either of your top picks, instead find one that bridges the gap such as painted gray or a medium toned wood finish.
  • Incorporate a bit of both. This can be tricky, but in some situations, it can really work well. In this example, you could use white cabinetry along the walls and dark espresso for the island.

For these next tips, let’s assume that one person wants a rustic look and the other would like a modern feel to the space.

  • Search out materials that meet both of your likes. This can be done! An experienced designer will have all sorts of great ideas that can meld two styles together nicely. In this example, you could consider cement countertops with an acid wash finish, reclaimed or live edge wood countertops, a farmhouse sink made of stainless steel, or a wrought iron light fixture with Edison bulbs.
  • Divide and create balance. Have your designer make suggestions for each category of selections and take turns making the ultimate selections. Your designer will already have done their homework to make sure all the options will work together, but giving each other the chance to have the last say on specific items will create a sense of ownership in both parties.

Don’t let your differing styles prevent you from getting started on your remodel. You can find a beautiful design through compromise and marry the two together. If you have a project in mind, give us a call so we can get started on transforming your home into a place that you will love.
