Home Improvement Show
Pat, Sandie, and Ben Thompson host the Home Improvement Show on Newsradio WOOD 1300. For many seasons Arbitron ratings have ranked their show the #1 most listened to show in the market. Each week people just like you call with questions on some facet of home improvement. Some people want to know what's hot in residential design and others are Do-It-Yourselfers wanting to know how to solve a problem they have encountered mid-project.

The 80 Minute Fall Home Maintenance Checklist
- Buy a case of furnace filters (12) and replace it each month.
- Deep clean the inside of the house to reduce allergies. Hire a pro if needed.
- Be sure gutters & downspouts are clear of leaves & other debris.
- Visually inspect the outside of the house & inside of the house down in the basement. If “critters” have access to your home, stop 'em w/ caulk & spray foam.
- Be sure your attic vents (lower and upper) are not covered with insulation. Ice dams on your roof are often caused by poorly performing insulation & improper ventilation in the attic.
- Close & latch every window in the house (Keep count, you’ll be shocked).
- Un-hook and store your garden hoses.
- Make your “Honey Do” list of BIG and small projects you need Thompson Remodeling to handle for you. If you’d feel more comfortable judging someone else, do the same at your friend’s house.

Sept 28th is the beginning of National Chimney Safety Week. Visit www.csia.org for more information to keep your family safe.
Here Are the Top 5 Things to remember about your home chimneys:
1) Get an inspection every year.
2) The chimney that houses your furnace & water heater flues also need to be inspected.
3) If you feel up for it, you can use a yard stick or a broom handle to check the amount of ash on the inside of your wood burning fireplace chimney. If there is more than 1/4" of soot, you need to have it swept.
4) Wood that is "green" or has a high moisture content is bad fuel & increases soot build up and soot build up leads to chimney fires.
5) Does your chimney have a cap on it? Keep animals out and prevent air leakage [energy loss] with a spring loaded chimney cap.

Ripped from the Headlines:
You heard about the building that exploded in Eastown last week. Here is your everything you wanted to know about Gas Leak Detection. Remember - Your nose is your best detector of a gas leak. And if you smell the distinctive smell of rotten-eggs, get out of the home, get airflow to the space, do not use anything electrical or anything with a spark. When in doubt --> Get out. And call 911 from a neighbor's house, even the static electricity of a cellphone could cause a spark. For more info.
