New Year’s Resolutions for Your Home

Posted by Ben Thompson on 12.29.22

Now is the perfect time to be thinking about how to make your home a happier and healthier place to live. New year’s resolutions are typically goals for improving your quality of life and if there’s one place where you can really make a difference, it’s at home. By focusing your attention and completing small projects and home improvements, you will be amazed at how much joy and comfort it will bring you. And since it’s the start of a new year, you can plan to cross these resolutions off one by one, throughout the year.

Purge & Donate

An annual purging of “stuff” can be so satisfying. Try not to get overwhelmed with the task itself, instead attack it room by room over a few weeks. Don’t forget to go through the items in your kitchen and garage; both of these areas are notorious collecting grounds. Throw things away that can’t be fixed and donate items that you have duplicates of or that you aren’t using anymore.

Upgrade Your Storage

After you purge and donate, take a look at what you have left. Do you have adequate storage to keep things organized? Consider adding inserts to your cabinets, revamping your closets, or custom built-ins with shelving, cabinets or cubbies. If your bathroom is cluttered, here are a few ideas for maximizing storage in your bathroom.

Safety Checks

Test all alarm systems and replace those that are old or out-of-order. Make sure that all of your potentially dangerous systems are in good working order like your chimney, dryer vents, and bathroom fans. Check our list of 10 potential dangers and make sure your house is safe and sound.

Improve Efficiency

Look for small changes that you can make that will help your family use less water and energy. Here are a few ideas: install a programmable thermostat, change all your light bulbs to LED or CFLs, or replace an old appliance with a new energy efficient model. Focus on the Details

Take on a few beautification projects around your home. Paint a room or two. Install a new light fixture. Purchase a new area rug. See our list of small ideas that can have big impact for more inspiration.
