Thompson Remodeling's Top 3 Tips for a Family Friendly Kitchen

Important things to consider when remodeling a family-friendly kitchen.

Let's face it, the kitchen is the busiest room in the house.  Whether it's cooking meals, grabbing a snack or baking cookies, your kitchen is bound to see people of all ages passing through.  Creating the family friendly kitchen to accommodate adults and children of all ages can be done.  All it takes is looking at your family's habits and planning your design accordingly.

Here are the three most important tips to consider:

1. Safety.  I read a great tip that suggested sitting on your kitchen floor to get a toddler's view of the space.  From this vantage point, there are all sorts of things begging to be opened, touched, and explored. With that in mind, you will want to plan for storing sharp, breakable, and potentially poisonous items in cabinets above counter height.  Installing toddler locks are always important, but you can never be too safe!  For appliances, seek out models with child lock out settings and safety guards.

2. Selections.  Everyone loves stainless appliances, but in a household of young children you will constantly be looking at tiny handprints.  Opt for solid colored or faux stainless appliances to make clean up easier.  Solid surface and quartz countertops will be better for high use and cabinets with a matte finish will show less wear and tear.

3. Create Kid Zones.  Do your children like to cook or bake?  Consider creating a special prep area just for them.  You can lower the counters, add a sink and a small refrigerator just for them.  If your children do their homework or crafts in the kitchen area, incorporate a small desk area away from the main cooking areas, but still within sight.
