Tile Design – Beyond the Subway Tile Movement

Subway tile has been having a moment…a big one actually. For years it’s been a mainstay in kitchen tile designs for backsplashes and bathroom shower surrounds. We love it for its classic appeal, ability to work in all types of design aesthetics, and variety of available colors and materials. But, sometimes our clients are seeking a different or unique tile design for their remodel. Thompson Remodeling’s design team enjoys finding the right tile to suit each client’s preferences. Here are just a few examples of tile designs from recent remodels where the homeowners decided to go beyond the subway tile movement.

Tile Designs That Go Beyond Subway Tile

For this kitchen remodel, our designer selected horizontal tiles in rich browns and grays that bring great texture into the space. Smaller tiles are set into a herringbone pattern, creating a lighter focal point above the range.

To enhance this mission style kitchen remodel, our client’s selected Pewabic tile for their backsplash tile design.  Pewabic tile is handcrafted stoneware clay tile, made in Detroit with a history dating back to 1903.  This beautiful tile design complements the cabinetry and countertops perfectly.

For a unique look in this two-toned kitchen remodel, we placed narrow, mosaic tile vertically.  This tile design draws the eye up and makes the kitchen feel light and airy.
