Upgrade the safety of your finished basement with an Egress Window.

Did you know that egress windows are required in finished basements by Michigan residential code?  The code states that an egress window is required in any habitable space or sleeping area in a basement or lower level that is below the fourth floor for both new and existing construction.

Thompson Remodeling recommends egress windows in all finished basements.  Even when your basement is not below the fourth floor, we feel it’s important to install egress windows to protect your family in case of an emergency.

Here’s what you need to know about Michigan egress window requirements in finished basements.

What is considered habitable space under the code?

Any area being used for living, sleeping, eating or cooking.

What areas are not required to have an egress window in a basement?

Bathrooms, closets, and utility spaces.

What are the window requirements?

An egress window must be installed within 44” of a finished floor and be at least 20”wide by 24”in height with a combined area of 5.7 square feet.  You must be able to open the window easily. Security bars and grills are prohibited.

What are the window well requirements?

A minimum of 9 square feet of floor area and 36” in width is required in order for the egress window to open fully. If the vertical depth exceeds 44” the well must have a permanently affixed ladder or steps that can be used when the window is open.
