Houzz Reveals 2023 Kitchen Trends

Every year, Houzz surveys homeowners who have completed renovations on their home in the last 12 months or are planning to in the next few months, to learn about trends and preferences in a variety of project types. For 2023, their kitchen survey revealed the following elements and selections are gaining or maintaining their popularity.

LAYOUT

The top element to transform is the kitchen’s layout.  The most popular kitchen layout is an L layout (40%), followed by U layouts (31%) and Galley (11%).

40% prefer for the kitchen to open to an interior room, with 61% preferring zero wall separations. 

SIZE

27% increase the size of their kitchen, with 51% measuring 200 square feet or larger.

ISLANDS

  • 55% add or upgrade their kitchen island.
  • 74% prefer an island that is 6’ or longer.
  • 46% select a contrasting cabinet color to the main wall cabinets
  • Storage preferences include drawers and cabinets with doors at 79%, while 14% request open shelf storage.

STYLE

Style preferences are spread pretty evenly behind Transitional, which is in the lead with 23%.

  • 11% Farmhouse
  • 11% Traditional

COLOR PREFERENCES

White has been the top preference for many years for wall color, cabinets, backsplash and countertops. For 2023, it continues to dominate.

  • Wall Color: 35% White, 24% Gray, 18% Beige
  • Cabinet Color: 40% White, 24% Wood, 10% Gray
  • Countertops: 41% White, 19% Multicolor, 13% Gray
  • Backsplash: 41% White, 16% Multicolor, 12% Gray
