Summertime is a great time of year to take care of some exterior maintenance and updates to improve your home’s curb appeal. There’s plenty to do, but with our handy list you can choose one or two items per weekend and have your house looking great within a month.

Curb Appeal Checklist

  1. Doors & Screens. First things first, clean all exterior doors and screen doors. Next, how does the paint look? Could it use a fresh coat or maybe even a new color altogether? You’d be amazed at how dramatic simply changing the color of your front door can be. Don’t be afraid to go bold with red or black to make it stand out, but be sure that the color will complement your siding. Make sure your screens don’t have any tears or and that the door is in good working order and make any necessary repairs. If your door or screen is old, consider replacing it with a new one.
  2. Shutters and trim. Give shutters and trim a good cleaning, repaint if necessary or, if you feel like a change, paint them a new color to match your front door.
  3. Siding.  Dirt and mold can build up and really make your home look dingy, so give your siding a good power washing.
  4. Lighting. Turn on your exterior lights and examine your home from across the street at night. Are all the lights in working order? Does your home look inviting? Do you see any areas that should be brightened up for safety reasons, such as stairways or walkways? You may want to update or add additional lighting to make it more appealing or to enhance safety.
  5. Sidewalks & Pathways. What is the condition of your sidewalks and pathways? Can you easily see them and walk along them without interference from overgrown shrubbery or weeds? Look for major cracks if your walkway is cement and have them repaired if necessary. Trim all shrubs and plants to create an inviting path that is easy to travel.
  6. Porches & Entry. Clean your front entries. If you have columns or railings, repaint them if necessary. Chairs can create a very inviting entry as long as you keep them clean and clear of clutter. Potted or hanging plants are a great way to add color and interest.
