Remodel with Color - Five Ways to Add Color to Your Remodeling Project

Posted by Ben Thompson on 06.27.15

Don't be afraid to add some color to your remodeling project! White, gray and beige are certainly the most popular choices for material selections and they create a great canvas to decorate against that's for sure.  But when you introduce color, you add visual interest and personality into a space. The idea of incorporating color, especially one you can live with for many years, may sound a bit intimidating. What if you choose the wrong color?  Here's the thing, I suggest using colors you naturally gravitate to especially for more expensive materials. Then experience with bolder colors for less expensive, easy to change items.

Here are our five suggestions on how to remodel with color.

1. Paint.  Go bold! Remodel with color by painting! Try a color that speaks to you and lightens your mood. Test it out on one wall and see how you feel about it.  If you love it, paint the whole room. Paint is easy to change, so don't be afraid.

2.  Furnishings.  Though not technically under the "remodeling" category, most people end up redecorating their newly remodeled spaces.  Bring color into your new space with upholstered furnishings, side tables, lamps,  pillows & throws, and area rugs.

3.  Cabinetry.  Remodel with color by adding some colored cabinetry.  We often see clients choose fun colors to use in their mudrooms and laundry rooms.  These are both great places for color to put you in a great mood when you come home and make doing the laundry a little less hum drum.

4. Lighting fixtures.  Don't forget the ceiling when you think about color. Lighting fixtures are a great way to remodel with color and can create a focal point that brings your eyes up to appreciate the entire room.

5. Tile. So much can be done with tile between the design and layout, the texture, and the color.  You can make a bold choice for a backsplash in a shade you love or go more subtle and introduce a colored detail.
