Design Tips for Functional Mudrooms

Every household can benefit from a mudroom. Families with children and pets appreciate this room for supplying the all-important drop and go zone for daily comings and goings. Even adult-only households recognize the benefits of having a place to store cold and wet weather necessities, shoes, cleaning supplies, and other items you want to have easy access to but keep out of the main areas of your home. Mudrooms can range widely in square footage, from a small alcove or hallway to a generously sized room. Great lighting. Generous overhead lighting is a must. This can be done with recessed lights or a ceiling mounted fixture. This is a great opportunity to bring your personal style into the space!
Durable & low maintenance flooring. As much as we love hardwood floors, your mudroom isn’t the best place for it. Luxury vinyl plank flooring or ceramic tile are both great options as they can withstand moisture and mud and will stand up to heavy traffic from both humans and pets.
Lockers or cabinets.Use wall space to install open or closed lockers to store coats and other items.
Wall hooks.Hang hooks inside lockers, cabinets, or on walls.
Bench seating. Integrate a spot to sit and take off and put on shoes. You’ll be happy you did!
Cubbies. Tuck cubbies under benches or above lockers or cabinets for additional storage options.
A sink. If space allows and plumbing is available a sink can be a lifesaver in the mudroom.
A command center. If space allows, create a space to keep your mail, post a calendar, drop paperwork, or even sit and work on a laptop or computer.
