Pantone Selects Bright & Cheerful Living Coral for 2019's Color of the Year

Posted by Ben Thompson on 12.9.18

This year marks the 20thyear that global color authority, Pantone, has been selecting a color of the year.  Artists, designers, home decor enthusiasts, and fashion aficionados around the world anxiously await the annual announcement. For 2019, the experts have selected Living Coral, which I would describe as a pinky-orange, but the pros say it is a coral shade with a golden undertone.  If you’ve ever been snorkeling or diving you may have seen this living creature in its true bold hue.

How is the Color of the Year Selected?

Each year, the experts at Pantone carefully study a wide variety of influences around the world before arriving at their final selection. They will look at popular travel destinations, art, fashion, movies, and all areas of design, as well as lifestyle and socio-economic conditions. This year they believe those influences pointed to Living Coral, which embodies a lively, comforting and optimistic mood in today’s world where we are constantly overwhelmed with technology and social media.

In September, we blogged about Sherwin Williams announcing Cavern Clay, an earthy terracotta tone, for color of the year. They believe this shade can create a comforting and warm atmosphere that reminds us of familiar earthy outdoor areas like the beach, the desert, or a canyon. We think it’s interesting is that both organizations noted a need for comforting. What do you think?

If you are looking for some easy ways to introduce Living Coral into your home, here are a few low cost options:

  • Paint or wallpaper a focal wall
  • Add a patterned or solid colored area rug
  • Accent furnishings or bedding with throw pillows
  • Update your window treatments
  • Use candles, a vase, dishes, and/or glassware to highlight the shade
