Project Spotlight: Seventeen Inches Makes All the Difference in this New Bathroom

Posted by Ben Thompson on 05.18.18

Imagine the length of seventeen inches. Now, consider if you added that width of space to your bathroom. What kind of impact could it have? A lot!  Read on to see how Thompson Remodeling took an older, cramped bathroom and transformed it into a functional and elegant main bath.

It’s not uncommon for condos to have one bathroom for both bedrooms to share. That’s exactly what the situation was here.  Unfortunately that shared bath was only 5’ wide.  That’s pretty narrow.  It had a basic set up including a one sink vanity and tub with shower curtain.  Our clients were hoping that it could be enlarged and updated with beautiful finishes.

After talking with the condo owners, we discovered that they also had some ideas in mind for altering the bedroom right next to the bathroom.  They had hoped to relocate their laundry facilities and change the entryway into the room.  Since we would also be remodeling the bedroom, we suggested borrowing a little space to enlarge the bathroom and all agreed that it was a good plan!

By gaining seventeen inches in width, our designer was able to make the space feel much larger. Previously, the shower curtain was creating a visual barrier, making the room feel short.  With the new tiled shower and frameless glass shower door, your eye can flow throughout the room uninterrupted.  The shower also has a bench seat and two niches for shampoo, soaps and other necessities.

Dark oak cabinetry, which made the space feel closed-in was replaced with a larger and lighter, white maple vanity.

We also added two floating shelves to provide additional storage and brand new lighting. The flooring got a much-needed update as well.  Carpet (yes, carpet) and tile was replaced with a light wood-look large format tile.
