A Guide to Planning Your Outdoor Space Remodel

Posted by Ben Thompson on 05.10.19

There’s just something about the sights and sounds of the outdoors that is very relaxing. Connecting with nature is good for the soul whether you are enjoying it through a picture window, sitting outside in the fresh air, or going on a hike with the family. That’s why many homeowners have decided to invest in creating outdoor spaces that provide the perfect spot to unwind and entertain. We encourage our clients to imagine outdoor spaces as natural extensions of their home and love to offer them options on how to remodel based on their individual family’s needs and functional preferences.  For some it may be a deck, while another family may be better suited with a screened or enclosed porch, or sunroom.

If you are thinking of remodeling your outdoor spaces, our guide below will prompt you with questions that will lead you to the best options for you.

  1. What types of activities would you like to be able to do in the space and which of those would require special requirements such as electrical, lighting, or privacy?

Here are a few popular activities and where it would be best suited:

  • Cooking or grilling – a deck and patio, and it would require electrical
  • Dining - would work in any type of outdoor space and would require lighting
  • Watching television – could work in all types of spaces but might be best suited for a covered deck or patio, enclosed porch or sunroom and would require electrical
  1. What types of features would you like to have?

Here are a few popular features and where it would be best suited:

  • Fireplace – patio or sunroom
  • Water features like a pond – patio
  • Ceiling fans – screened or enclosed porches and sunrooms
  • Wet or dry bar – will work in all types of outdoor spaces
  • Pergola – deck or patio
  1. How do you feel about bugs?

If you prefer to enjoy the outdoors without having to worry about any pesky bugs, you will want a screened or completely enclosed space.

  1. Is protection from the sun and heat important?

Let’s face it, it can get HOT in the summertime, but with an outdoor space that’s enclosed you’ll be sitting pretty in the air conditioning!  If it’s just shade you are after, you can put a roof over your porch or patio.

  1. Do you want to have use throughout the year?

A sunroom is the best option for families that want a space where they can enjoy the outdoors year-round.

We hope that this guide has been helpful for you! You may still find that more than one solution could fit your needs and that’s where we come in. We can help you weigh all of your options and design a custom outdoor space that you and your family can enjoy for years to come.
