Basement Remodeling Trends

Trends are changing, basements are now an extension of a home's look and style. A basement remodel has the potential to add function to your home. Since we are spending so much time indoors during the winter months, remodeling your basement may become a necessity.

Add Built-in Shelving and Storage Units

Basements have an abundance of under utilized space ideal for additional closets and built-in shelving. Large walls are the perfect location for shelving units to help control clutter and encourage organization. With careful placement, your shelving can also serve as a room divider to define or break-up a large open space. The addition of closets helps contain and hide unsightly clutter quickly and easily.

Integrate Your Basement with the Main Floor

Whether you're creating a home office, playroom or man cave, finishing your basement is most likely done with the intention that you will spend a fair amount of time in the space. Adding certain details can draw people to the space and encourage them to stay. Widening  and opening a narrow stairway allows you to join two levels of the home and utilize the lower level by making it more accessible. With the space is being used more often, it may also make sense to include a bathroom in your plans.

Add Finished Ceilings and Crown Moldings

Adding finished ceilings hides unsightly pipes, support beams, floor joists, and wires. Take your time discussing the lay out of your plan with a designer. For higher ceilings, tray, and coffered ceilings are both options that promise to add architectural interest. For lower ceilings consider crown molding for the illusion of height.

Incorporating Your Hobbies into the Design

This new trend converts your basement, otherwise known for stashing clutter, into a home theater for the movie fanatics, wine storage for the winos, or a game room for the gamers. The possibilities are endless and if you are looking for a smaller more manageable way to improve the quality of the time spent in your home without the cost of moving or purchasing a second home, remodeling is the ideal option.
