Kitchen Trend Roundup: Results from NKBA’s 2017 Research

The results are in! Every year the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) surveys its members to learn the current and emerging trends they see in kitchen and bathroom remodeling. The questions aim to find out what the professionals are specifying in terms of design style, colors, materials, and products. Last year, they heard from 562 professionals who work directly with homeowners throughout North America. Here’s a look at what they reported for trends in kitchen remodeling.

Current Kitchen Remodeling Trends

Overall Design Aesthetic

  • Transitional is the most popular style followed by contemporary, with traditional now in third place
  • Barn and pocket doors
  • Universal design features

In Cabinetry

  • Clean and simple doors.
  • White and gray
  • Two-toned
  • Furniture-style
  • Under cabinet lighting
  • Cabinets with pullouts and/or rollouts
  • Rustic and reclaimed woods

Countertops

  • Quartz
  • Granite still popular, but less than it used to be

Fixtures & Hardware

Appliances

  • Inductions cooktops
  • Convection ovens
  • Microwave drawers over free-standing or built-in versions

Technology

  • Wifi enabled appliances
  • Docking stations

Emerging Kitchen Remodeling Trends

Overall Design Aesthetic

  • Specific variations on contemporary designs including: industrial, mid-century modern, mountain modern and coastal
  • Blue and black as an overall color palette

In Cabinetry

  • Blue painted and high gloss finishes
  • Metal, particularly popular with young, male designers
