We always look forward to the fall when paint companies begin to announce their selections for color of the year. It’s not only fun to see what shades have been chosen, but also interesting to learn the reason behind the choice. The latest predictions have just started to roll in and one of the first is Cavern Clay selected by Sherwin Williams, an earthy terracotta hue that conjures up visions of the canyons and deserts of the Southwest. Their color experts believe we can look forward to a rebirth of the 1970s next year with a modern twist and Cavern Clay is just what we need to create a relaxed yet refined backdrop for our interiors.

Last year’s pick of Oceanside, a bold jewel toned teal, was chosen to represent global travel and a need to seek adventure. So it seems last year we wanted to surround ourselves with a more exotic environment and this year we want to create a comforting and warm atmosphere that reminds of familiar earthy outdoor areas like the beach, the desert, or a canyon.

Cavern Clay lends itself to the popular midcentury modern style, characterized by clean lines and simple silhouettes of the 1930s-1960s. The orange-brown hue brings the outdoors in, by providing a great backdrop for bright colors or greenery to pop. We think it could work great in a home office or family room!

What do you think of Cavern Clay? Can you envision it in your home?
