Add Curb Appeal by Painting an Exterior Door

Posted by Ben Thompson on 09.14.12

The front door is the focal point of your homes exterior. It is also a great location if you are looking to add a dash of bold color and boost your home's value. Just last week our friends at Premier Painters came by and added some color to the front door here at Thompson Remodeling.  If you are looking for a simple way to give your home curb appeal; painting an exterior door is one way to get the most bang for your buck.

Before                                                 After

Materials:

Painters Tape

Sponge

Fine-grit sandpaper

High-density foam mini rollers and brushes

1 quart adhesion primer

1 quart satin or semigloss exterior paint (Valspar Duramax Magenta Base mixed with Spanish Tile is pictured)

1) Remove the hardware. Cover any glass accents or windows with painters tape. Clean the door by scrubbing the surface with a wet sponge, then lightly sand the surface.

2) Apply adhesion primer to the door using a foam roller. Use a foam brush to paint any raised or depressed panels. Let dry. Tip: Allowing your door to properly dry between coats will ensure a flawless finish, this may mean overnight. Using the same technique as with the primer, apply paint, starting at the center and ending with the sides. Let dry.
