Every year, Houzz surveys homeowners who are completing renovations on their home to learn about trends and preferences in a variety of project types. This year, their kitchen survey revealed shifts in design styles and confirmed selections that continue to gain and maintain their popularity.
This year, L-shaped kitchens (35%) edged out U-shaped kitchens (32%) for the most preferred layout by a small margin. U-shaped and G-shaped kitchens each saw a decrease in overall popularity, while L-shaped, Galley and Single wall kitchens all had an increase.
This year, farmhouse style (12%) edged out traditional kitchens (11%) for the third most preferred design aesthetic. Transitional (25%) ranked in first place and had the most dramatic gain in popularity over last year and was followed by Contemporary (17%) in second place.
White wins the top spot in both cabinets (43%) and backsplashes (36%) and not just by a slight margin. This color offers so much flexibility in all types of design aesthetics, which is likely one of the reasons for its preference. Wood cabinets trailed behind white with only 25% and multicolored backsplashes behind white with only 19%.
Engineered Quartz Countertops
Engineered quartz countertops have been gaining on granite for the past several years and this year they finally achieved the top position with 43%. Granite still holds the second position with 34%.
Specialty Storage in Cabinets
Keeping items organized within cabinetry is a priority for many of those who were surveyed. The most wanted items include pullout waste and recycle bines, cookie sheet organizers, deep drawer organizers, and pull or swing out trays/shelves.
