Here’s What’s Trending in Kitchen Design

Sources for home design inspiration is plentiful these days.  From the variety of home renovation shows to the millions of photos on sites like Instagram, Pinterest and Houzz, you could easily spend hours (or days) getting ideas for an upcoming remodeling project.  There are also gorgeous model homes and glossy magazines, not to mention places you may visit on vacation or even in your everyday life.  We love to see what will trickle down from all of these sources and make its way into the remodeling designs we create for our clients.

According to the pros and the millions of Houzz users, here are six of the latest popular elements in kitchen remodeling today.

  1. Colored cabinets.Painted cabinets are being shown everywhere and in bold colors like navy blues, emerald greens, and even dramatic black. In recent months, Houzz users have begun to favor these over the ever-popular white cabinetry.

Here in Grand Rapids, we haven’t seen much in the way of dark colors in the kitchen, but we have seen bright choices being made in mudrooms.

  1. Shaker style cabinetry.A shaker cabinet features a flat panel door with a plain raised-square frame. They are easily one of the most versatile to incorporate in either traditional, modern, or farmhouse kitchens.Thompson-Remodeling-Modern-Farmhouse-Kitchen23
  1. Quartz countertops that look like marble. The patterns available in quartz today are really gorgeous and mimic the look of granite and marble. Homeowners are selecting quartz for its beauty, durability and low maintenance. And it’s typically more affordable than granite and certainly less than marble.

Quartz is the favored choice by Thompson Remodeling clients and we recently completed a kitchen for homeowners who preferred to use materials with a naturally organic look and they chose a marble-look quartz countertop.Thompson-Remodeling-Natural-Elements5

  1. Open shelves. These work well in kitchens that are tight on space to create a sense of openness. Alternatively, open shelves can be incorporated to add style in a larger space or provide a perfect spot for displaying art, favorite dishes, or family heirlooms.

Thompson Remodeling clients love open shelving and we’ve included them in many kitchen designs as well as bathrooms.Thompson-Remodeling-Making-the-Connection4

  1. White on White. White cabinets never go out of style, and the trend of pairing them with white countertops and backsplashes creates a clean, bright and welcoming space.  Most designers will recommend introducing color to add dimension and interest, and we do as well.
  1. Gray is the new neutral. If any color is going to knock white off of its pedestal, we predict it will be gray. People are moving away from wood tones and choosing gray cabinets as a neutral base to design their kitchen around.

Although we haven’t designed an all gray kitchen yet, we have incorporated gray into several two-toned cabinet plans. Thompson-Remodeling-Modern-Farmhouse-Kitchen3
