Congratulations! You’ve decided to remodel and a brand new kitchen is on the horizon. Soon, you can celebrate and show off your new space to your friends, family and neighbors. Kitchens play an important role in our everyday lives so preparing ahead of time will make the process much easier on your family.  To help you prepare, we’ve put together the following list of tips to help you get ready.

Thompson Remodeling's Tips to Prepare for Your Kitchen Remodel

  1. Get the construction schedule from your remodeler. Create a calendar and block out the timeframes when you will be without key items in your kitchen such as your sink, countertops, and appliances.  Also note when significant items will be installed and available for use.
  2. Pack up all your cabinets and drawers. The best approach is to keep all the contents of each in it’s own box. Clearly label each box with its contents. This will make unpacking much easier.
  3. Make plans for refrigerated items. If possible, move your old refrigerator to the garage or to an easily accessible location. Another option is to rent one or purchase a mini-fridge for use during the remodel.
  4. Set up a temporary kitchenette. Designate a spot to use and set aside the following items:
    • Coffee maker
    • Microwave
    • Toaster/toaster oven
    • Hot plate
    • One pot and one pan
    • Crock pot
    • Can opener, bottle opener, wine opener
    • A few sharp knives, serving spoons, and a spatula
    • Cutting board
    • Paper plates, plastic wear, napkins
    • Coffee mugs
    • Sponge, dish detergent, dish towels, paper towels
    • Small plastic tub for washing dishes
    • Foil, plastic wrap, storage bags or containers
    • Take out menus
    • Pet supplies: bowls, food, etc.
  5. Designate an eating spot with a table and chairs.
  6. Designate a place for feeding pets.
  7. Do some meal planning. Make a list of things you can cook on the grill, prepare meals that can be frozen and reheated, and shop for easily prepared meals such as soup, sandwiches, or microwavable items.
