Interior Painting - A Small Investment with Big Impact

Ready for a change? Interior painting is one of the most simple and low-risk ways to make a big difference in any room. Whether you hire someone to paint your home or you choose to go the DIY route, here are a few ways to make the most out of painting your interior walls.

1. Find Inspiration

To get started, choose colors that already exist in your room. Look at artwork, accent pillows, a rug, or a vase to draw your inspiration. Also think about what mood you want your room to convey. Make your bathroom feel soothing and serene with cool hues. Choose bright colors for a kids’ bedroom or playroom. Want a bold bathroom? Look at dark luxe colors like eggplant purple or navy.

2. Test Your Color Choice

Once you have an idea of what you’re looking for, go to a local paint store and buy some samples. Bringing them home and paint a small section of your wall.  This will allow you to see how each paint color will look in your home and will show you more than a little paint chip. Test each color in natural lighting, artificial lighting, and at night.

3. Choose a Finish

Flat finishes such as eggshell and matte paint are perfect if you are trying to hide any imperfections. Use these in rooms with less traffic and little maintenance such as living rooms and dining rooms. In rooms that get heavy foot traffic and require frequent cleaning, look at glossy finishes - such as satin and semi-gloss - so you can easily wipe down any dirt, debris, and dust in the kitchen, bathroom, and trim.

4. Prepare Your Home

If it’s not possible to move furniture out of the room you’ll be painting, be sure to cover all furniture and flooring so they are not victims of paint drippings. If necessary, tape off trim and the edges that connect the floor and ceiling. Patch any holes, dents, and any other irregularities with mudding and sandpaper before you apply the paint.
