One of the most common complaints homeowners have about their bathroom is that it is too small. And when it’s too small, it’s usually short on storage too. So, how can you create better functionality in space that already feels cramped? Great question!
Here are 10 design tips you can use in your bathroom to maximize space.
- Pocket doors.Think about the space you lose when your door opens into the bathroom. For really tight spaces, we recommend replacing a swinging door with a pocket door to save approximately 10 square feet of floorspace.
- Glass shower doors.Utilizing a glass shower doorinstead of a shower curtain will allow your eye to see into the shower space, which makes the room feel larger. An additional benefit is unobstructed light flow.
- Careful vanity selection. As tempting as it may be to select a big gorgeous furniture-style vanity with lots of drawers, a small bathroom might be better served with a floating vanity, one that is anchored to the wall that doesn’t extend all the way to the floor. Another option to consider would be a vanity that offers open shelving at the bottom for storage.
- Large vanity mirror.Mirrors work well for creating a larger sense of space and reflecting light.
- Towel bars on shower doors. Save wall space by installing your towel rack on a glass shower door.
- Wall mounted faucets. Free up countertop space on your vanity by selecting a wall-mounted faucet.
- Floating shelves.Looking to add space for toiletries or extra towels? Install some floating shelves above the toilet.
- Shower niches. Add niches in your tile shower design to hold everything you need including soap, razors, and shampoos.
- Built-ins. If space allows, add some cubbies that are reset into the walls.
- Great lighting. We can’t emphasize enough how a great lighting plan will make your bathroom look bigger and brighter. Start by maximizing any natural light you have and then add overhead lighting and task lighting to the vanity and in the shower area.
